What is a Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) (subclass 403) visa?

The Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early Professionals Scheme (MATES) is a new temporary mobility gateway for Indian graduates and early-career professionals with specific qualifications in high-demand sectors.

MATES offers young professionals the opportunity to live and work in Australia for up to two years, gaining employment and important experience in their fields of specialization including renewable energy, mining, engineering, information communications technology, artificial intelligence, financial technology, and agricultural technology.

Up to 3,000 temporary positions will be allocated each year through a visa pre-application 'ballot' process. Successful applicants can apply for a Temporary Work (International Relations) (Subclass 403) visa in the MATES stream. Participants will be allowed to bring dependents who will not be counted against the cap.

Before you apply: 

  1. Create an ImmiAccount 
  2. Check that you meet the MATES eligibility requirements 
  3. Have a valid Indian passport 
  4. Confirm when the ballot registration period is open

Eligibility requirements for applicants: 

  • Must be selected in the relevant ballot process
  • Be between 18 and 30 years old at the start of the ballot registration period.
  • Never have participated in MATES before. 
  • Must have graduated from an accredited educational institution within 2 years of the ballot registration period. 

Hold a qualification (Bachelor's degree or higher) that is relevant to one of the following sectors:

  • renewable energy, 
  • mining, engineering, 
  • information communications technology, 
  • artificial intelligence, 
  • financial technology or agricultural technology. 
  • English proficiency required (overall IELTS score of at least 6, with a minimum of 5 in each of the four components). 
  • Provide financial support during your stay. 
  • Ensure enough health insurance coverage. 
  • Must meet additional visa criteria, such as character and health checks.
