Atlantic Immigration Program Requirements

The requirements of AIP are as follows:

1. Job Offer from a Designated Employer

Candidates must have a valid job offer from an employer officially designated by one of the Atlantic provinces. Designated employers commit to helping newcomers settle successfully in Canada.

2. Work Experience or International Graduate Status

Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Work Experience: At least one year (1,560 hours) of paid, full-time experience in the past five years in a National Occupational Classification (NOC) 0, A, B, or C job.
  • International Graduate: Graduates of an Atlantic Canada post-secondary institution do not need work experience but must have completed a minimum two-year study program and lived in the region for at least 16 months.

3. Educational Requirements

The educational requirements depend on the NOC skill type of the job offer:

  • Candidates with foreign education must provide an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

Candidates must demonstrate they have enough funds to support themselves and their families upon arrival in Canada. However, individuals already working in Canada on a valid work permit may be exempt from this requirement.

Employer Designation under AIP

Employers in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island can hire foreign workers without an LMIA by becoming designated under the Atlantic Immigration Program. To become designated, employers must:

  • Apply to the provincial government
  • Demonstrate good standing with regulatory bodies
  • Show a need for hiring international talent
  • Provide settlement support to hired employees
